That First ChatGPT Moment Seems Like Yesterday
Remember your first real conversation with ChatGPT? For most of us, it happened sometime in 2023. The experience was jarring, exhilarating, maybe even a little unsettling. Here was technology that could write, reason, and respond in ways that felt genuinely intelligent. It was a watershed moment, and we all knew something fundamental had shifted.
Fast forward to the end of 2025, and that initial shock has evolved into something more nuanced. We've moved past the "wow" phase and into the "now what?" phase. And the journey from there to here? It's been wild.
The Lead Nobody Could Keep
For a while, it felt like OpenAI had an insurmountable advantage. They'd proven the concept, built the infrastructure, and captured the world's imagination. Many of us, myself included, assumed they'd maintain that lead. We even started asking whether there was a ceiling to how good these models could actually get.
Then Gemini and Claude turned on the gas. These weren't just incremental improvements or me-too products. They felt fundamentally different. Suddenly, the edges we thought we could see, the obvious limitations we'd all noticed, started to blur. The ceiling we were so confident about? It had been raised, and we couldn't quite see where it was anymore.
When the Ceiling Disappears Into Fog
The most fascinating development of 2025 wasn't any single breakthrough. It was the realization that the boundaries we thought were clear have dissolved into uncertainty. Where does scalable AI actually top out? We don't know. Is it a mile away? Ten miles? Are we even measuring distance correctly?
OpenAI's rapid response to competition proved something important: these companies have been holding back, even if just a little. They're not running at full speed. They're pacing themselves, which means the finish line is farther away than we thought. The edges we believed we could see for scalable AI? They're obscured now, hidden somewhere in the fog.
The One Instruction, One Job Problem
Here's what did become clear this year: context windows have real limitations. Every additional instruction you give an AI agent reduces the reliability of its performance. Think of it like this, LLMs can walk and chew gum at the same time. But ask them to walk, chew gum, juggle, and solve a Rubik's cube? The odds of success plummet.
This isn't a flaw. It's just how the technology works right now. And recognizing this limitation has actually pushed us toward better solutions.
Why Architecture Became Everything
The response to context window limitations? Multi-agent systems. But that was just the beginning. What started as "let's use multiple agents" quickly evolved into something far more sophisticated: entire systems where AI agents are specialized components, each doing one thing really well.
It's an orchestra model. You don't have one musician playing every instrument. You have specialists working in coordination, each contributing their part to create something remarkable. This year, we stopped trying to make AI do everything and started designing systems where AI does specific things brilliantly.
The Irony of Training on Human Thinking
Here's something worth sitting with: AI was trained on human interaction, human language, human ways of solving problems. By forcing AI to think and work like we do, we might be severely limiting what it's actually capable of. There are hints, just hints, that LLMs could operate in ways we literally can't comprehend, using reasoning processes that would be exponentially faster than anything we recognize.
I'll spare you the sci-fi speculation. But the point stands: we genuinely don't know what's coming. And that's both humbling and electrifying.
What This Means for Those of Us Building Real Solutions

That means staying on top of every new development, constantly testing, always improving, but never losing sight of what actually matters.

Because when a city manager is using AI to analyze community data, or when a resident is interacting with an AI chatbot to get answers about local services, the stakes are real. The technology has to work, and it has to be trustworthy.
The Future Is Coming Fast
Local government is moving into the future whether it's ready or not. Budgets are tighter. Staff are stretched thinner. Resident expectations keep climbing. The old ways of doing things simply can't keep up.
AI isn't going to solve every problem. But it can clear the backlog, automate the routine, and free up talented government employees to focus on the complex, strategic work that actually requires human judgment. As we close out 2025 and look toward 2026, one thing is certain: we're still in the early chapters of this story. The models will keep improving. The architectures will get more sophisticated. The applications we can barely imagine today will become routine tomorrow.
